A blog for PC gamers
Top Ten games of 2009

Scanning the interweb you’ll notice most of the major gaming sites have been releasing their game of the year for 2009, or top ten. Seeing that Gamer Limit has also released a list today I’ve decided to release one of my own.

I’m only listing PC games and games that I discovered or started playing in 2009, and also to keep within the theme of my bog. Hence the blog title “What’s Komplex Playing?”. Now some of you may say “Lame! some of these games didn’t even come out in 09!” Wellllll tough sh$@, this is my blog. Read or leave :P

#10 Modern Warfare 2 - I was so hyped for this game, my clan was going to start its own ladder and we’d be playing this game for years! Welll, we were wrong.. No dedicated servers, hackers galore, the shittiest matching system I’ve ever seen, and no built in clan scrims/matches was what we got. Granted the game graphics and gameplay are great, but once you bet the 3-4 hours of single game play and get romped by hackers a few times in multiplayer you get sick of it. It’s still on my list as I DID spent tons of hours playing to level my prestige up, and playing with clan members. However if I could go back in time I would have skipped this one all together.

Gameplay Video

#9 Aion - Wow killer? No, but still pretty fun. Though My attention span only keep me in the game till level 20ish (Dragon age, then MW2 were released). I might return in the future and give it another whirl.

Gameplay Video

#8 BorderLands - GUNS GUNS GUNS! Though a direct console port with a somewhat annoying menu system, this FPS/RPG was a very fun play through. I’m sure I’ll return for another round after I bet the game I’m currently playing (Heroes of might and magic 5, again… I know.. I just love it!).

Gameplay Video

#7 Hearts of iron 3 - Hoi3 was probably the worst of the HOI series. However that’s like saying it was the worst of Porsche’s. It was still a good game compared to all the other trash out there these days. BTW if you don’t know what the HOI series is. SHAME ON YOU! Go buy it or do the research! For those of you saying “Well HOI might be the best WW2 simulator of all time, but its way to complicated”. I don’t want to hear it, go back to your 5 button console game, and leave the real strategy games to the gamers who don’t flip burgers for a living. :P

Gameplay Video

#6 Space Trader Merchant Marine - Obscure trading game, that doubles as a crappy shooter anyone? Yes, yes. The game might have been outdated, and the FPS element was almost sad. However I loved this game for the dynamic trading elements. It very much reminded me of Gazillionaire (anyone… no one remembers?). Bahhh anyway, besides the concept of buy low sell high, there were some other bounty/quest roles adding in. This is probably why it sucked up so much of my time, as I keep replaying to get a better high score to submit online to the boards.

#5 Need for Speed Shift - I’ve always been a fan of the NFS series and Shift didn’t let me down when it came to the physics they created for this game. Being an ex-street racer myself, and occasionally taking my own Porsche to the track I can tell you they did a VERY good job on this game. I know allot of gamers complained that the game was too hard or different from other racing games. That’s completely true! It’s realistic.

Gameplay Video

#4 sins of a solar empire entrenchment - Ahhh Sins! The space based RTS game released an expansion this year, and as its a not a NEW game it really shouldn’t be on this list but… I’ve logged a ton of hours in the original game and unlocked 95% of the achievements. I’ve also been playing Sins on an off when I get bored with other games. This is a “true” RTS game, like TA or Supreme Commander, you have to win via strategy instead of attrition like other RTS. In real rts’s all of your resource mines/etc never run out. Gathering solar power, why would you ever run out? These games focus on this point and force you to think differently. Don’t get me wrong Stracraft and other “normal” RTS’s are still fun, but they aren’t as strategic or engaging as real RTS’s. It’s like comparing checkers to chess. while both fun, chess is so much more dynamic and strategic.

Gameplay Video

#3 World of Goo - That game with the little alive balls? Yup, that’s the one! This indie game caught me off guard as I was expecting something for kids. It was instead a very cool brain teaser game with a few interesting quarks. All in all I don’t think the game play was long enough, but I’m glad they put in an “OCD” mode, though I think some of them aren’t achievable.

Gameplay Video

#2 Dragon Age - I love Bioware! Their games are always so rich, their gameplay dynamic and re-playable. Ever since Baldur’s Gate and then KOTOR (Knights of the old Republic) I’ve been a fan. Dragon Age appears to have a similar game mechanics engine with amazing graphics and detail. The storyline and characters were well thought out and very engauging. I can’t wait to see the next expansion they release as I assume this will be a series of games all using the same DA engine.

Gameplay Video

#1 Mount and Blade - No game was more satisfying to play this year then M&B. There’s nothing quite like mounting up and charging a line of foot soldiers, hacking your way to glory. Or assaulting a castle with your hand picked heroes knights and soldiers by your side.

The game is simply amazing! A strong RPG element for leveling your character and heroes (even basic troops gain EXP and can be leveled up). Dozens of paths to choose, (outlaw, lord, knight, slaver, trader, bounty hunter, etc). You can also build your party up and lead hundreds of soldiers to the field. Sure the graphics may be a little outdated, and there is no multiplayer. However the sandbox environment and the shear volume of mods available for the game will keep you racking up the playtime hours. Easily my #1 pick for 09. SIMPLY LOVE IT!

Komplex’s Top Ten Upcoming PC Games
By: Komplex | September 11th, 2009

You drool over the video previews and trailers!
The E3 coverage made you have to get some fresh underwear!
You want them NOW dammit!

YES this is my top ten wish list for upcoming PC games. Why just PC you say? Well it’s a fairly large percentage of gamers and I really don’t think it gets as much coverage anymore. So with that in mind, lets dive on into the goodness.

#10 Bioshock 2 1/4/2010 – For anyone who played the first Bioshock at night, with no lights on, you can appreciate what they’re trying to do in BS2. The story line was also very involved in the first and I think we can expect more of the same in BS2.

Gameplay Video

#9 James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game – James Cameron is the man, even if some of his movies were turned into crappy games. The world that he’s created in Avatar looks amazing, not to mention it has cool aliens, assault suits, and probably a deep storyline.

Gameplay Video

#8 Command & Conquer 4 3/30/2010 – I have fond memories of playing hours of C&C over an old school IPX lan with my brother and friends, and have always been a fan of the series. However this Nod/GDI alliance has me baffled and has intrigued me at the same time. Maybe a new alien enemy? Mutant Tiberian humans? As it looks from the trailers Tiberian has spread all over the planet, and appears to have it in a chock hold.

Gameplay Video Well… not really as none has been released yet..

#7 Assassin’s Creed 2 11/17/2009 – The first one was just amazing, and they claim this one is has all the old gameplay with more options and features. Built on a better graphics engine! This game is setup to become a power house of a title and series, hopefully it delivers. (besides the E3 trailer made me nut a little) :P

Gameplay Video

#6 Star Wars: The Old Republic TBA 2010 – They called it “The next evolution in MMO” at E3 the said they were addressing a major factor missing in all MMO’s which is “Story”. The plan is to have a deep rich story line for each class of the game, and this will require tons of story cuts and voice overs for every NPC in the game! (Or so they claim). It’s defiantly one to keep an eye on. It has a TBA which might mean late 2010 (which means it really shouldn’t be on my list), however people have been saying this could be a spring release.

Gameplay Video

#5 Supreme Commander 2 3/29/2010 – Ok ok, so if you claim to love RTS games and have never played TA (Total Annihilation), or Supreme Commander. Then you’re just a walking douche pretending to be an RTS fan. Wellll ok, many that was a little harsh, but that’s how good these games really are and with more tech trees, deeper gameplay, better graphics, and phenomenal looking maps this is for sure on my wish list.

Gameplay Video

#4 Aliens vs. Predator Trailer 2/1/2010 – So just pretend that you never saw the crappy AVP movies. The games AVP1 and AVP2 were both amazing at the time of their releases. I spent many a lan party running around in the vents killing my friends an an alien. Or playing the predator and hunting some humans. And of course as a marine just having your heart race knowing there are monsters trying to kill you and eat your corpse, or take your head as a trophy. All in all I’m super excited for this title and I hope the multiplayer is fun and solid, as this has the possibility of pulling my mutiplayer attention from CoD.

Gameplay Video

#3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 11/10/2009 – I think this was the king of E3, and I must have watched the trailer a dozen times now. The game just looks truly amazing and after seeing the multiplayer I’m raring to get started in some clan battles!

Gameplay Video

#2 Diablo III TBA 2010 – One of my favorite games series of all time, and light years ahead of other games when the first two were released respectively. All on a cool “play for free” multplayer platform called Battlenet. SWEET! just sweet! I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one, and chew for all I’m worth.

Gameplay Video

#1 StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty TBA 2010 – Ahhh The holy grail of my list and the bane of my “TBA” existence! SC2 is like the super hot friend you had in college that promised to sleep with you someday, and teases you every once in a while with a small skin show. But can you touch? NOOOO… However there is the promise that SOMEDAY you’ll get to. My only worry is that this infatuation will end the same as it did in college… You’ve hyped yourself up for it so much that it’s really just “ok” at best when you finally get it. Out of consideration for the time and energy you spend waiting for it, you play it for a time, then when you can’t stand it anymore you put it down and move on. So I’m taking the opposite approach, I’m NOT going to get all SC2 crazy. I’m just going to look at other games and bide my time waiting for it to come out, not super concerned about every leak of info and snippet of gameplay. With this I hope to play it for the first time and be blown away. Wish me luck!

Komplex’s Top Free Games!
By: Komplex | September 10th, 2009

komplexa

Waaa waaa what? Free you say? Well indeed sir, there are a ton of free PC games out there. Unfortunately there’s also a lot of crap. I’ve been on a free game downloading spree since March and now I’ll share my list of games I think are worth your time and bandwidth.

THE KEY:
FOR ME (my favorite of the bunch)
FOR YOU (Had fun playing it, but it’s not my favorite)
FOR EVERYONE (something real popular that just didn’t “do it” for me)

RPG category:
After stuffing my hard drive with mostly crap here are three I think that are worth trying.

FOR ME: Requiem: Bloodymare – Right off the bat this game perked my interest. I mean, wow you need to confirm your age just to enter the website! Now we’re talking. I wasn’t let down when it came time to play for the first time either, rich environments, interesting creatures, auction house, bank, guilds, PvP etc. Its like WoW only for adults! (Well maybe no quite). It is a very fun game and after telling a few friends about it I soon had 5 of them just as addicted as I was. It also has a very cool purchase system. Instead of real cash you can buy in game items using points, you can get these points by filling out surveys or completing offers with their marketing partner Peanutlabs. So after 20-30 mins of fake emails, names, and opinions given I had a cool mount and a neat costume. There are a few draw back to the game:
- Instances are kind of boring and have the same 3 creatures per instance.
- Once you hit level 40 all the quests seems to get real boring and repetitive.
- Besides killing nightmare creatures and PVP end game is also boring.
However if you’re looking to pass the time until WoW: Cataclysm gets here, I’d recommend trying it out.

#2 FOR YOU: Runescape – Now granted I had fun playing this, though to be honest it felt a lot like WoW. However as I progressed I had the sinking feeling that if I didn’t spend any money on the game I wouldn’t have a good time. It seemed to me that most of the players running around had spent money on the game and were having a much better time then myself. Also the start zone was a little crowded and I played the waiting game on mobs and some ore/wood respawns. All in all I really didn’t give this game a thorough play through. I just couldn’t make myself play it more then 5-6 hours before my mouse ended up over the uninstall icon.

#3 FOR EVERYONE: Maple Story – Ok ok listen, before you say something like “I’m not downloading that crappy Korean game to play with a bunch of gold farmers”. Or some other similar remark, let me remind everyone that the game has changed a lot in the past year. True you can still pay real cash for in game items and bonuses, but there seems to be an influx in truly “free” players which puts you on an even level with a lot of other players in the game. All in all if you can get past the very cartoonish feel or enjoy anime then I can suggest the game. if you’re coming from WoW, just skip this one…

MY VOTE: Requiem: Bloodymare

FPS Category:
Granted I only tried about 6-7 free FPS games but here are my favs (ps I don’t want to see comments on how AA should be here, the game sucks, get over it).

#1 FOR ME: CrossFire – After downloading this game in March and being blown away that it was completely free, I then proceeded to start downloading other free games to see what else was out there and what I was missing. A little about this game? Well it’s your standard shooter (noobs, pros, and hackers). It has a neat in game point and leveling system that earns you not only EXP point but GP points that you can use to purchase some of the 40 guns they have. It also has some cool game modes (ghost mode = sweet). You can also throw down some real cash and buy special guns and different skins. Spending money does give you a slight advantage but all in all it’s not very noticeable. Having gotten “into” the game myself I joined a clan and do clan matches through their in game clan match system and also through their clan tournaments. In case anyone cares you can look at my profile here

#2 FOR YOU: WolfTeam - Jigga whhaa? Wolfteam? Let me guess its a FPS shooter that has wolves in it? Actually yes, that’s exactly what wolf team is all about. It’s basically a FPS in which you can turn into a werewolf for melee combat and do crazy stuff like run on walls, and jump like you were in the X-Games. I enjoyed this game for a few reasons. #1 the cool wolf only modes (a bunch of different werewolf types to pick from). #2 You can spawn with a mobile turret that you can basically setup anywhere and mow down your opponents with. Some of the cons of this game would be the dated graphics and weird rules on ping (turns out if your ping isn’t in the same sync or range as the rest of the players you get auto booted). But still a fun game when you want a break from CoD.

#3 FOR EVERYONE: Battlefield Heroes – Like team fortress did ya? Fans of the Battlefield series? Well I have the game for you! I’ll admit BH was pretty fun at first, I started during the beta, so there were only a few maps and everyone was pretty much a noob. However as the game progressed I found myself more and more annoyed by the overpowered snipers and the people who actually spent money on the game. It seems like if you really want to own at the game you have to be pro (like most games) or just spend a crap ton of money. The lack of maps and the unbalanced maps also got on my nerves over time. But come on, I mean coooommmee ooonnn. It’s a free game and it’s can be very fun. Soooo don’t let me neg you out on trying it. I think its worth your drive space to try out and I think you should. So pause your torrents and do it up.

MY VOTE: Crossfire

Here is a brief list of the free games I’ve reviewed. Let me know if I missed any gems:

MapleStory
Metin
Pristontale
Dungeon and Dragons Online
Crossfire
Ace online
Wolfteam
War Rock
Savage
Combat Arms
Sudden Attack
Solider Front
Exteel
America’s Army
Requiem
EuDemons
ArchLord
Battlefield heroes
SilkRoad
Runescape

My Top TEN PC Games of the 90′s
By: Komplex | September 9th, 2009

title

Well, I can’t think of a more fitting first blog entry then a background of my favorite PC games from the 90′s. It’ll give anyone reading a brief insight into the games of my youth (without boring the crap out of anyone). Please note as I grew up “consoleless” I’ll only be including PC games in this list.

So without Further a due I give you my top 10 games of the 90′s

10. Warcraft: Orcs vs humans 1994 (really was 95): This is the game that broke the genre right open and made a small software company named Blizzard into one of the most profitable game companies of all time. Though this game didn’t support many features we’ve come to expect in standard RTS’s. And it’s critics said it was a direct rip off of Dune II we still came to all love this game. It helped pave the way for all future RTS games and made the genre popular.

9. Wolfenstein 3D 1992: Thinking the game had some 3d glasses with it, I spent some of my paper route money and picked this game up. I then spent the next 8-10 hours straight playing through the entire game. I remember because I had to convince my father that I couldn’t sleep and that the game would help me relax and get tired, when he came down to use the bathroom at 3am. Though it lacked any real replay value past the 2nd time through and it didn’t have multiplayer options this game opened up the whole new genre of FPS. Now I debated putting Doom or Doom 2 in the list, but I think I’m going to have to go for Wolfenstein. Not because it was the real first FPS or it helped launch ID software, but because it the first game I had ever played through in one sitting and the first time I convinced my father to let me stay up all night on a non school night. :)

8. Diablo 1997: And Blizzard, opening it mighty hand bestowed the gift of Diablo to the world of men and yay it was good and the people doth smile and relish in their contentment. Besides it had Battlenet and you could aoe one shot mobs, whats not to love? I don’t feel that I have to say very much for this one, it speaks for itself unless you were under a rock and never played it.

7. Daggerfall 1996: Ok ok technically its called “The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall” but come on people, that’s just way to long. Speaking of long, this game was epic. It was the first real RPG and nonlinear/sandbox game I really got into. You could do anything!!! AN-E-THING! Want to kill guards? shop keepers? townsfolk? What to steal from shops? buy houses, boats, horses? Want tons of cool weapons, magic, quests, and an absolutely HUGE kingdom to explore? NO PROBLEM. Daggerfall was where it was at. If the game had multiplayer options back then, no one would have heard of WoW we’d be playing “Daggerfall: expansion 27″ and loving ever moment of it right now.

6. Dune II 1992: Years before Warcraft this game/genre was being laughed at as being an OCD game developers baby. Yes it was the first TRUE RTS, but the level of micro management in the game drove a ton of gamers away (my brother and cousin included). Which was fine for me as PC multiplay wasn’t exactly supported in 92 anyway. If you could get past the micro management of units the game was really VERY good. Though I will concede to my brother that only being able to select and control one unit at a time was completely asinine.

5. Reunion 1994: At the time this game was the epitome of what I was looking for in a PC game. It had space travel, it had aliens, it had resource and technology research management, it had colony and mining options for planets, it even had some RTS elements. Through all that into a game where you could build massive fleets of space ships and DING DING DING you had my attention. Though it was little known, and even less played it still firmly has a spot in my top five games.

4. Planet’s Edge 1991: ZOMG, a graphical DEEP RPG set in space with trading and a huge sandbox feel in 1991!! Yes, at the time this game knocked many a sock off in the PC gaming community. Though the game was extremely difficult to master and contained over 100+ hours of game play to fully beat in it’s entirety. Wellll and the fact that you needed a massive manual to figure the quests out, and there were some bugs. All that aside this game provided me many wasted hours of exploring a vast diverse galaxy.

3. Starcraft 1998: Ahhh yes, Starcraft a game that has almost single-handedly spawned the entire competitive gaming industry in Korea and has a very wide fan base. I for one spend countless hours OWNING (“pwning” was not yet invented) noobs on Battlenet via my 56k dial up connection and evil laughing while I zerg rushed.

2. Master of Orion 1993: I really don’t care if the genre never really took off, or that people bitch and moan about 4/5x micro management. This game kicked ass, plain and simple. I’m sorry if you “didn’t get it” or your ADD didn’t allow you to pay attention, if so you really missed out. In fact I credit most of my adult asset/money management, multitasking, and managerial skills in general to playing this game for countless hours everyday for years on end. Within an almost infinate replay value this became my go to game whenever I got sick of whatever else I was playing at the time. Ah and the management, OOOOHHH the management. How do I build up a big enough fleet to crush my enemies? Do I neglect new research or my planet development? Should I stop expanding? Do I try to make peace with them and go after them later? I could write questions like that for ever. In 1993 MOO forced my 12 year old brain to think about thinks completely different, and for that it will always have a special place in my heart.

1. X-COM: Enemy Unknown 1993: There has yet to be a game that has come even close to X-COM. Many have tried. Tried and failed? NO tried and died!! :P In all seriousness just thinking about how fun this strategy game was and how far ahead of its time it was will make me cream my pants a little. It’s the only game on the list that I have played just about every year since its release. I even go as far as to buy every game title release that claims to be like, or have any X-COM roots or play style. For those of you who give a flying f*ck the closest game I’ve found IMO has been: UFO: Extraterrestrials

When I started making a list I had almost 50 games on it. It was very hard for me to cut that down to a top ten, but I wanted to share a few that didn’t make it.

Near misses:
Civilization
Heroes of might and magic
Lords of the Realm 2
Command & Conquer
Mechwarrior series
Total Annihilation

Honorable mention:
Duke Nukem 3D
Unreal Tournament
Baldur’s Gate
Doom
Fallout
Grim Fandango
Descent
SimCity
Half Life
Freespace
Tie Fighter
Star Wars: Rebellion
Quake
Ultima
Rainbow Six

What about you? What was your favorite game or games of the 90′s?
